Why I Like These Pairings At first, when I watched Yu-Gi-Oh, I wasn't really into any of the pairings--I didn't have access to the Internet and had no idea other people even thought that way about the anime. However, I accepted Yugi/Tea and Yami/Tea as fact from the first, simply because the anime seemed to point so strongly towards romance between them. If you've visited my other Yu-Gi-Oh site, Transcendence, you probably know that I am a diehard Seto fan, so you probably wonder why I wouldn't like Seto and Tea as a couple. Truth be told, I also kind of liked that pairing for a time, but only because it mirrored an unrequited love in my life that, unfortunately for me, ended in just a tenuous friendship. However, as that one fell away, another one sprang up in its place, and even though I dare not count myself as half as brave and strong as Tea is, I could see the glimmers of a Yugi/Tea bond between us, not only as friends, but as soul mates. The remaining storyline of our love is told symbolically in my fanfiction "Not Right Now," but the sequel to it (after which this site is named) is much happier. OK, you're probably thinking "Too much info..." right about now, but I think it's quite healthy to like a certain pairing or a certain anime for deeper psychological reasons. I think that the real challenge to these pairings is the fact that a lot of people can't imagine Yugi ever growing up to become much like Yami, which is what I think will inevitably happen. That's also an underlying reason why I like these pairings--Yugi is very young and, while not quite "innocent," is still naive. Tea is also very young and still has big dreams. There is much love between them even now, but I think as the anime progresses (and maybe we'll see hints of it in YGO! GX), they both will mature and find even a deeper love and friendship than they have now. Many non-supporters of this couple do not see the possibility of personality evolution (which is pretty rational, since they're only fictional characters, XD), but it's important to see how the story develops, and if the characters are allowed to flourish and bloom, then the show will be of as high a quality as I perceived on my viewing of the first episode. |
